Sexual dimorphism in the tardigrade Paramacrobiotus metropolitanus transcriptome
Published in Zoological Letters, 2024
Transcriptome analysis of the gonochoristic tardigrade Paramacrobiotus metropolitanus identified approximately 2,000 male-biased genes located on 29 non-male-specific genomic loci. Two Macrobiotidae family-specific DMRT paralogs were found significantly upregulated in males, while no doublesex ortholog was detected in any tardigrade genome, suggesting doublesex emerged after Tardigrada divergence. Several anhydrobiosis genes exhibit sex-biased expression, indicating potential roles in protecting sex-specific tissues against extreme stress.
